Alpha, Beta, Delta and Theta
A large part of the Silva research stems from these four terms. The premise is that our brains can operate in four different wave frequencies – Alpha, Beta, Delta and Theta.
Beta brainwave frequencies are the fastest brainwave frequency. It is also the frequency we most commonly function in. Beta is our day to day thought processes. When one is strongly engaged, they are in beta. Examples would be conversation, solving problems or reading. While many of us cant help to always be in beta, prolonged beta operation can lead to stress and mental disorder.
Alpha, which is slightly slower than beta, also happens when we are awake. The difference between alpha and beta is that it is more relaxed and effortless alertness. This can be achieved through meditation or even day dreaming. Its healthy to spend time everyday awake in alpha. Short relaxation periods also help you function more often in alpha.
Theta, which are slower than alpha, can be reached, awake or sleeping. Theta waves are associated with dreams, creativity and intuition. To develop your intuition, its important to be in the theta state of mind. Theta is also the state people are in when they are hypnotized.
Delta waves are the slowest brain frequency of them all. When a baby is born and our last moments in life, we are operating in delta. Deep REM sleep is also the function of the delta brainwave frequency.
